In Gabriel Garcia Marquez book “Love In the Time of Cholera”, the main character is frustrated in trying to give a box of chocolates to a love interest. He tries for months every day, and frustrated at his failure, he hands them to a complete stranger and says, “this is for a love going all to hell.”
I’m sure we’ve all had that experience, perhaps in life, of sending love out there to somebody who doesn’t necessarily reciprocate in sharing a similar experience.
Although not involving a box of chocolates with a woman who was like a grandmother to me, she consoled me with this wisdom, she said, “No love was ever wasted.”
My takeaway from that is that this capacity that we have to love other people is a gift and we get no guarantee that that will be returned, but simply knowing that we have the capacity and that we can share that feeling, we can put that out into the universe, is quite an amazing thing all by itself.
