In Mitch Albom’s book The Five People You Meet in Heaven, the main character, Eddie, passes away and in the afterlife he meets with five people from his life and has conversations with each one of them that are Illuminating in some way about his character or other issues.
And what’s interesting, is in at least some of these conversations, people are sharing their side of a situation that Eddie and that person both experienced. But it includes details that Eddie wasn’t aware of.
Although all of this takes place after Eddie has passed away, it made me wonder how many situations we might be involved in, something with someone, that caused some hard feelings or made us feel bad about something, that if we were to talk to them, hearing their side of it, might illuminate that a little bit more, just as these conversations did for Eddie.
In all these cases it just gave him more information about the context and what they were experiencing that changed his perception of what happened.
If you have anything that’s kind of stuck in your mind or memory related to somebody else, where it feels a little bit unresolved, and you’re feeling comfortable enough with that person to reach out to them and hear their side of the story, it can be very helpful to just seeing another facet, another aspect, another window, into the things that we may have thought were one way, but could turn out to be quite different and possibly better than we recall.
I’ve read and reread Albom’s classic book. Life-changing, filled with eternal truths. Should be on everyone’s bucket book list!
I completely agree, of course — it’s interesting reading his books a second time, for sure! Thanks for taking the time to comment!
