One of the legendary stories in our family is my older brother Robbie coming home from his first day of elementary school and my mother asked him “Where’s your seat in the classroom?” And he said, “I sit right behind the kid in front of me.”
It’s a funny story, but it’s also interesting how that very logical little boy grew up to become a very logical and excellent lawyer. I love family stories for that reason, because they help create a sense of continuity in our families, a sense of history, and help us capture the personalities of dear ones whether they are still with us or if they’ve passed along.
I hope that if there are family stories that you’re aware of, that helped share something triumphant or simply funny that someone did, that you continue to share those. Not only does it help create this sense of family history, and your own family’s culture, but some of them are probably real gems.
