I saw a video recently by a home organizing expert who was suggesting that if people want to reduce clutter, they and their family mementos or things that are important to them, that they’re not sure if they should let go of, to take a picture of that item and that way you know they can let the item go, and they’ll still have a picture of it to look at. I kind of disagree very much with that with that idea. I think there’s something about physically being able to handle and hold the things that are important to you, and if they’re important enough for you to have kept them to a certain point, there might be a very good reason why, yes photographs of mementos can help preserve them, and I’m a little more in favor of that for older documents that might deteriorate over time, but for things that I really cherish, I like keeping them around, and I think the real article beats the photograph of that thing any day of the week.
