One of my favorite songs is by the legendary Willie Nelson called “Nothing I Can Do About It Now.” It’s a song about letting go of past regrets because there’s nothing that can be done about those things. The lyrics capture an important truth—not everything from our past is within our power to change. This idea is also a cornerstone of a basic counseling technique: learning to separate what we can influence from what we cannot.
If there are things that are bothering you from the past, sometimes simply acknowledging that there’s nothing you can do about them now can free up valuable energy. As leaders, this approach not only helps us maintain our own focus and resilience, but it also enables us to guide our teams more effectively.
