The 2005 comedy “Waiting” is about the team of people who work at a chain restaurant, sort of like a Fridays, called Shenanigans, and it’s about the wait staff’s relationships with one another and also with customers, and how they cope with the stresses of working in a fast-paced restaurant environment.
One of my favorite characters in the movie is Bishop. Bishop is the dishwasher played by the wonderful actor Chi McBride and he is like a counselor for everyone else in the restaurant. He has this very calm demeanor. People come to tell him their problems and he listens with great patience and empathy and gives advice that is not always clear, but is always wise.
It made me realize that we all need a bishop in our lives, someone who is truly focused on our well-being, who cares about us, who listens patiently and empathically, and who gives us advice and wisdom from his own background and experience. If you have a bishop in your life you know what I’m talking about, it is a very good thing indeed.
